| Our book club recently picked three great books: "Fried Green Tomatoes" by Flagg, "Midnight in the Garden of Good And Evil" by Berendt, and this one, "A Thousand Splendid suns" We loved all, but "suns" hit some nerve (the setting and general world conditions now?)and we weren't able to shake it. We've not yet read "Kite" but will take that one up next. Would also recommend that you try Flagg's FRIED GREEN TOMATOES if you haven't already read it. | ||

Behrens has written a fantastic piece of historical fiction and Fergus's story will stay in my mind forever. | ||

| Long-time consumers of crime fiction are usually searching for something new -- there's nothing worse than realising that you have started to read something which is merely a re-warming of earlier themes and ideas. Such readers will be pleased by the appearance of The Prophet Murders, an outrageously entertaining novel by Mehmet Murat Somer. The book is set in Istanbul, where the glories of the Ottoman Empire have long vanished. One of the quirkier attractions of the modern city are the transvestite clubs, which offer a wide variety of diversions (some of them very physical). When a series of corpses begins to appear (some recently killed, others murdered years before), the world of the clubs is very disturbed -- particularly as the methods of dispatch are often extremely unpleasant. The narrator of the novel, the club-owner Burcak, is a transvestite, routinely described as ?she? by those who know her (even though Burcak is male, with no surgical alterations); Burcak has been dealing with personal threats based on her irreligious behaviour, but now it's beginning to look imperative that she track down a particularly nasty killer. As well as being a crime novel of a particularly outrageous character (rather like the author, in fact), we have the added value here of being taken into the transvestite gay subculture of Istanbul, which will be something of a new experience for most crime readers. And Mehmet Murat Somer is the perfect tour guide to this unusual world (where the iconoclastic secular world rubs shoulders with an unbending, religious ethos); Somer?s skill as a writer has enabled him to create a particularly unusual protagonist. The author has said that he may be straying into pastures new with future books, but in the meantime this entertaining outing is more than enough to be going on with. --Barry Forshaw | ||

| It's been a long while since I read a book by Dick Francis, having missed last year's UNDER ORDERS. For years I watched eagerly for his annual offering and many of them still hold a place on my shelves. I'm delighted that after the sad death of his wife Mary, a new collaboration with son Felix is producing such solid material. In usual Francis fashion, the protagonist is a pleasant fellow with a connection to British horse racing; in this case, Max Moreton of Newmarket, a young Michelin-recognized chef. Moreton unknowingly caters a poisoned dinner on the eve of the prestigious 2,000 Guineas race, and on Guineas Day he is again catering when the site is blown up. Max's kitchen is closed and he's served with a notice of prosecution under the Food Safety Act. To complete the tale of Max's woes, the brakes are cut on his car and his house is burned down. This is fairly standard for a Dick Francis protagonist, and Max withstands it all with the usual philosophical attitude. Max may be less edgy than some of Francis characters, and as a result less compelling. | ||

| Requiem for an Assassin is a great example of an author trying to find a way out of a characterisation cul-de-sac that he has gotten himself into and only being partially successful in his attempt at doing so. At the end of the previous John Rain thriller, titled The Last Assassin in the US, Eisler's half-American/half-Japanese assassin had finally put behind him the never-ending (and slightly tedious) saga of his affair with the Jazz pianist Midori and returned to the arms of his Israeli lover Delilah. With an affirmed friendship with ex-Marine sniper Dox in place and the death of a dangerous old adversary it appeared that Rain was finally changing his self-imposed isolated lifestyle for a more normal one with long term human relationships, even if he wasn't giving up the business of killing. With Requiem for an Assassin however, it appears that Eisler somewhat regrets humanising Rain in this fashion. Although when we pick up his story he is still with Delilah, living in Paris, it is rapidly revealed that Rain is having difficulty dealing with his new lifestyle. When Dox is kidnapped by another face from his past, ex-CIA spook Hilger, in an effort to coerce Rain into undertaking some wet-work, it is the perfect excuse for the old, emotionless killing machine (the Ice Man as Rain refers to that side of himself) to resurface and get back into the action. All of which feels like something of a cop out. Over the previous novels in this series Eisler has managed to slowly humanise John Rain in a way that has always felt real and logical. There's been no road to Damascus conversion; the man has always remained a killer, but in increments Eisler has allowed Rain to grow and form long term attachments. With Requiem for an Assassin however, it feels like Eisler regrets allowing this to happen and has sought a way to bring back the Rain of old; the one man killing machine of the earlier novels. The result is not only a somewhat contrived set-up but also a step back in terms of character development. | ||
